Restoration companies in Massachusetts

Which restoration companies in Massachusetts can we vouch for on evidence?

No ranking yet. We list 27 Massachusetts restoration companies in total; the Boston area has its own page, and the 16 here are the rest of the state. None is ranked because a website on its own reaches 69% coverage at most, just under our 70% bar, and no Massachusetts business registry or license file feeds our checks yet. The table compares them on what they document instead.

144 companies reviewed in Massachusetts, 27 met the listing bar (16 of them outside the city pages), 0 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more).

How we check companies in Massachusetts

A mold-heavy list

On this Massachusetts list, mold edges out water. 14 of 16 listed companies document mold remediation and 13 of 16 document water damage, so a handful here don't advertise water work at all. Ask before you call one about a burst pipe.

The other services are spread fairly evenly. Fire and smoke restoration and storm damage each appear on 11 of 16 sites, and sewage or biohazard cleanup on 10 of 16. None of the 16 is a franchise location.

12 of 16 say they answer around the clock, and 12 of 16 say they help with insurance claims. Free estimates show up on 8 of 16.

What Massachusetts sites leave out

Standards get named more than most details: 10 of 16 cite one, usually IICRC S500 for water or S520 for mold. That's the company's own statement and we score it as self-reported.

The after-the-job questions get less. 6 of 16 say how quickly they arrive, and just 1 of 16 describes any warranty. If a guarantee matters to you, ask for its terms in the written contract, which Massachusetts requires on residential jobs over $1,000.

Why the table isn't ranked

A ranking needs 8 companies at 70% coverage. Everything a company's site can tell us adds up to 69% at most, and the median coverage here is exactly that. The last points come from records someone else keeps, such as a state business registry entry. We haven't connected a Massachusetts registry or the Home Improvement Contractor file to our checks, so no company here can cross the line yet. Companies in and around Boston are on the Boston area page, which works the same way.

How to check a restoration company in Massachusetts

Registration comes first. Under Chapter 142A, Section 9 of the General Laws, a contractor or subcontractor can't offer or perform residential contracting services unless it's registered as a Home Improvement Contractor with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. When we checked in September 2026, the state's registration lookup had moved to the MA Contractor Hub at contractorhub.mass.gov. The state also licenses individuals who work as construction supervisors, a job state law assigns to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards.

Money rules follow. Residential contracting work over $1,000 needs a written contract, and the deposit can't exceed the greater of one-third of the total price or the actual cost of special-order or custom materials that have to be ordered ahead. A request for more than that up front is a reason to stop and ask.

Signing at your kitchen table carries its own protection. A household services contract over $25 signed away from the seller's place of business can be canceled by midnight of the third business day after signing, under Chapter 93, Section 48.

For homes built before 1978, the EPA has authorized Massachusetts to run its own lead Renovation, Repair and Painting program, so certification comes from the state rather than the EPA. We haven't logged Home Improvement Contractor, IICRC Certified Firm or lead certification checks for any Massachusetts company, so each profile lists them as Not verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Massachusetts restoration company need to be registered?

For residential work, yes. Chapter 142A, Section 9 of the state's General Laws says no contractor or subcontractor may offer or perform residential contracting services unless registered with the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation as a Home Improvement Contractor. Separately, the state licenses individuals who work as construction supervisors.

How much can a Massachusetts contractor ask for up front?

Under Chapter 142A, Section 2 of the General Laws, residential contracting work over $1,000 needs a written contract, and the deposit can't exceed the greater of one-third of the total price or the actual cost of special-order or custom materials.

Can I cancel a contract I signed at home?

A household services contract over $25 signed somewhere other than the seller's place of business can be canceled by midnight of the third business day after signing, under Chapter 93, Section 48 of the General Laws.
