Restoration companies in Tennessee

Which restoration companies in Tennessee can we vouch for on evidence?

Tennessee gets a comparison table, not a ranking, for now. It holds 23 companies. Ranking starts at 70% coverage, a company's own website can only supply enough evidence for 69%, and we haven't connected an open-data registry or license file for Tennessee that would add the rest. We won't lower the bar for one state, so the table sorts companies by what they document instead.

118 companies reviewed in Tennessee, 23 met the listing bar, 0 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more).

Restoration Companies in Tennessee Compared (2026)

Key Takeaways

  • Mold sits close behind water: 20 of 23 Tennessee companies document it, next to water damage on 22 of 23.
  • Only 5 of 23 state a response time, and only 5 of 23 describe a warranty.
  • Tennessee's contractor board lists Mold Remediation as its own specialty classification, so ask whether the company holds it.
  • In nine counties, residential remodeling from $3,000 to $24,999 needs a Home Improvement license. Check yours.

The 23 Tennessee companies below each cleared our listing bar, out of 118 we reviewed. Clearing it means the company's own website names a restoration service, gives a contact route that works and a location we can read, and a second source confirms it. From there the Evidence Score applies the same fixed weights as every other state. Coverage, shown next to it, is the portion we could check. Nothing unchecked earns points, and ratings or review counts never do.

What the evidence shows

A mold-heavy list

Tennessee's list stays deep past water damage, at least for mold. 20 of 23 companies document mold remediation, close behind the 22 of 23 that document water work. Fire and smoke appears on 16 of 23. Sewage and biohazard cleanup reaches 13 of 23 and storm damage 12 of 23, so those are the services to filter for first.

16 of 23 say they'll answer at any hour, and the same number mention insurance claim help. Free estimates are stated by 14 of 23. One listing is a franchise location.

Missing from most Tennessee sites

The two gaps are the same size. 5 of 23 companies say how long a crew takes to arrive, and 5 of 23 put any warranty in writing on the site. When a pair of scores sits close together, those are the questions that break the tie.

Standards are named by 12 of 23, usually IICRC S500 or S520. That's a self-reported line on the company's site, scored as a claim. We found no third-party credential for any listed company that we could confirm ourselves, and the Board's license search isn't wired into our checks.

The gap between 69% and a rank

The median coverage on this page is 69%. Website evidence can't go higher, because the remaining points belong to an entity record from a state business registry and the years operating it shows. The Secretary of State's Business Entity Search has that information, but we haven't connected it. Once we do, Tennessee companies with a clear record could move into a ranked list.

How to check a restoration company in Tennessee

Size the job first, because Tennessee's rules turn on dollars. A prime contractor needs a license from the Board for Licensing Contractors before bidding or negotiating on a project of $25,000 or more. Roofing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical subcontractors need one when their share hits $25,000.

Below that line, your county matters. Bradley, Davidson, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Marion, Robertson, Rutherford and Shelby counties adopted the Home Improvement license, which covers residential remodeling from $3,000 to $24,999.

For mold, ask whether the company holds the Board's Mold Remediation (S-F) classification. Then search the company on the Department of Commerce and Insurance public license search, linked from the Board as Verify a License.

Keep the deposit small. Tennessee's Home Improvement law, as the Attorney General describes it, bars a down payment above one-third of the contract. For a home built before 1978, the EPA runs lead Renovation, Repair and Painting certification in Tennessee, with an emergency provision that exempts firms from certain requirements after a disaster. The Secretary of State's Business Entity Search shows an entity's type, status and registration date. On our profiles, license, IICRC and lead-safe checks read Not verified until one is logged.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a Tennessee contractor need a state license?

The Board for Licensing Contractors requires a license before a prime contractor bids, offers or negotiates a price on a project of $25,000 or more. Some subcontractors, including roofing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical, need one when their portion reaches $25,000.

What about smaller jobs on my house?

In Bradley, Davidson, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Marion, Robertson, Rutherford and Shelby counties, a separate Home Improvement license is required for residential remodeling projects from $3,000 to $24,999. Outside those counties, the Board says that license rule doesn't apply.

Is there a Tennessee license for mold remediation?

There's a classification for it. The Board's classification outline lists Mold Remediation (S-F) as a specialty under Agricultural / Environmental Specialty, so it's a classification a Board-licensed contractor can hold. The outline doesn't say at what job size it's required.

How much can a contractor ask for before starting?

The Tennessee Attorney General's Division of Consumer Affairs says the state's Home Improvement law bars contractors from asking for a down payment of more than one-third of the total contract.
