Restoration companies in Ohio

Which restoration companies in Ohio can we vouch for on evidence?

Not yet. Ohio has an unranked table of 24 companies. A website on its own tops out at 69% coverage, just under the 70% bar, and we haven't wired an open-data registry or license file for Ohio yet, so no company here can be ranked. We won't lower the bar to fill the gap. Use the table to compare what each company says it does, then check it locally.

183 companies reviewed in Ohio, 24 met the listing bar, 0 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more).

Restoration Companies in Ohio Compared (2026)

Key Takeaways

  • Water damage is on 22 of 24 Ohio sites. Mold shows up on 16 of 24 and fire on 15 of 24, and sewage cleanup on fewer than half.
  • 7 of 24 say how fast a crew arrives. Only 5 of 24 describe a warranty on the work.
  • None of the 24 shows a third-party credential we could confirm ourselves.
  • Ohio doesn't license residential contractors statewide. Your local building department may, so find it by address first.

We reviewed 183 Ohio restoration companies and 24 met the listing bar: a restoration service named on the company's own website, a working way to reach it, a location we could read and a second source that agrees. Each one carries an Evidence Score and a coverage figure. Coverage is the share of the score we could check, and anything we couldn't check earns nothing. Star ratings and review counts play no part.

What the evidence shows

Water first, then a split

If your basement flooded, you have the widest choice. Water damage appears on 22 of 24 listed sites. After that the list splits. Mold remediation appears on 16 of 24 and fire and smoke work on 15 of 24, so plenty of listed companies skip one or the other. Storm damage shows up on 15 of 24. Sewage and biohazard cleanup is the thinnest line at 11 of 24.

Filter the table by the service you need before you compare scores. A high score built on water work tells you little about a smoke job.

17 of 24 say they answer around the clock. 16 of 24 mention help with insurance claims, and 11 of 24 state free estimates. One listing is a franchise location; the rest are independent.

Gaps worth asking about

Response time is the most useful promise a restoration company can put in writing, and only 7 of 24 Ohio sites do. Warranties are rarer still, at 5 of 24. 10 of 24 name an industry standard such as IICRC S500 for water or S520 for mold. That's the company's own claim and we score it as one.

What none of them show is a credential we could confirm ourselves. So when you call, ask three things: how soon can someone be on site, what do you guarantee, and which standard will you follow on my job.

Why the table stops at 69%

The Ohio list's median coverage is 69%, the most a website can earn alone. A site can document services, contact details and process, but the rest of the score depends on outside records: a business registry entry and a years-operating date from it. Ohio's Secretary of State keeps a Business Search over its Business Database, but we haven't connected it to our checks. Until we do, the table compares companies on what they document and nothing ranks.

How to check a restoration company in Ohio

Start local. Ohio leaves residential contractor licensing to cities and counties, so the Department of Commerce sends homeowners to the Board of Building Standards' Building Department Lookup. It finds the building department for your address, and that office can tell you what a contractor needs to work there. Complaints about residential contractors go to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Section.

Next, confirm the business exists. The Secretary of State's Business Search covers filings submitted to and approved by that office, so you can match the name on your estimate to a registered entity.

Watch the paperwork if a salesperson signs you up at home. Ohio law gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a home solicitation sale.

For a house built before 1978, the EPA runs lead Renovation, Repair and Painting certification in Ohio. Any paid work that disturbs old paint falls under it, so ask whether the crew is Lead-Safe certified. Each Ohio profile shows state license, IICRC and EPA checks as Not verified until one is logged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ohio require a state license for restoration contractors?

Not for residential work. The Ohio Department of Commerce says residential contractors aren't required to be licensed by the state, but local building departments may have their own verification or licensing rules. The state board licenses commercial electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors, which is a different check from the one most homeowners need.

How do I find out what my city requires?

The Department of Commerce points homeowners to the Board of Building Standards' Building Department Lookup. Enter your address and it gives you the building department that covers it. Call that office and ask whether the company you're considering is registered or licensed there.

Can I cancel a restoration contract I signed at my kitchen table?

Often, yes. Under Ohio Revised Code 1345.22, a buyer in a home solicitation sale can cancel until midnight of the third business day after signing. For a service sale, the seller can't start work during that window, apart from narrow exceptions written into the law.

Why is no Ohio company ranked?

Ranking needs coverage of 70% or more, and the last points come from a third-party record such as a state business registry entry. We haven't connected one for Ohio. An owner who wants to add evidence can use the corrections page.
