Northern Virginia's Arlington area has its own page. Of the companies elsewhere in the state, all 22 document water damage, and that's where the agreement ends. Mold remediation drops to 15 of 22, fire and smoke to 14 of 22, storm work to 12 of 22 and sewage cleanup to 9 of 22. If your problem is mold or a sewer backup, the field narrows fast, so check that column first.
Emergency cover is strong: 82% say they answer around the clock. Insurance claim help appears on 15 of 22 sites and free estimates on 14 of 22. Half name an industry standard such as IICRC S500 or S520, which is the company's own claim and scored as one. None of the listed companies is a franchise location.
6 of 22 sites give a response time and 4 of 22 describe a warranty. Everywhere else, the customer has to ask. That gap accounts for most of the distance between a median coverage of 78% and a median score of 45 among the ranked companies. We could check nearly everything on these sites, and the items that earn points often weren't there.
The State Corporation Commission publishes its entity tables on data.virginia.gov. The latest version there is a 2024 snapshot, and it's the one we use. We search it for each company's exact name in the same city. Some were found, with a formation date that feeds years operating. About as many came back as a clear miss, which still counts as checked. Either result lifted a well-documented company over the 70% line.
The companies without a rank are the ones whose name didn't point to one clear record, found or missing, so the registry items stayed unchecked and their coverage sits below the bar. A newer LLC can land there because of the snapshot's age, as the FAQ explains.
Virginia licenses contractors through the Board for Contractors, part of the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). When we checked in September 2026, the Board's page said a contractor license has two parts. The class, A, B or C, sets the value of the contracts and projects a company may take on. The classification or specialty sets the type of work it may do. Ask for the license number, then confirm on DPOR's License Lookup that both parts fit your job.
Mold sits under consumer law. DPOR's January 2026 report advised against creating a mold license and pointed to the Consumer Protection Act, which already requires a company selling residential mold remediation to hold a certification from a recognized mold certifying body. Ask which certification the crew holds and who issued it.
For a home built before 1978, the EPA runs lead renovation certification in Virginia, so a crew tearing out painted drywall or trim should be Lead-Safe certified. We haven't logged DPOR license, IICRC Certified Firm or EPA Lead-Safe checks for any Virginia company. Look those up yourself; each profile shows them as Not verified.
Not with a separate mold license. When we checked in September 2026, a DPOR report to the General Assembly dated January 1, 2026 concluded there wasn't sufficient evidence that licensing or certifying mold inspectors and remediators would reduce the risk mold presents to the public. Instead, the Virginia Consumer Protection Act, as amended in 2025, bars selling mold remediation for a home as a professional mold remediator without a certification from a nationally or internationally recognized certifying body, and requires the work to follow EPA mold guidance, ANSI/IICRC S520 or an equivalent standard.
Usually, according to the same DPOR report. It notes that Virginia's contractor law counts remediation, cleanup or containment of premises to remove contaminants as improvement work, and says contractors doing mold remediation should hold a Class A, B or C license. Search the company on DPOR's License Lookup.
The SCC tables on data.virginia.gov are a snapshot. Corporations run to late 2024, and the LLC table holds no company formed after mid 2022, so a newer LLC can come back without a match. That's a gap in the data, not a mark against the company. A match confirms the entity exists and gives the formation date we use for years operating.
Dates are when we checked. Report an error.
