How we check companies in California
Beyond the big metros
Take away Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento and San Diego and 69 listed companies remain, in cities and towns across the rest of the state. Water damage is close to universal among them, on 67 of 69 sites. Mold follows at 58 of 69 and fire and smoke at 57 of 69. Storm work and sewage and biohazard cleanup (44 of 69 each) are where the list thins, so if a sewer backup is your problem, sort on that column first.
Emergency cover is strong: 62 of 69 say they answer 24/7. Insurance help appears on 80% of sites. That tells you a company expects insurer-paid jobs, not how it handles a dispute over scope, so ask who talks to the adjuster. Free estimates are stated by 44 of 69.
One listing is a franchise location, scored with the same weights as everyone else.
Quiet on the follow-through
The gaps show up halfway through a job. Only 25 of 69 say how fast a crew arrives, and just 7 of 69 mention a warranty. 47 of 69 name an industry standard such as IICRC S500 or S520, a self-reported claim we score as one. A blank means the site doesn't say, and we score only what's stated.
That's the distance between a median coverage of 75% and a median score of 52 for the ranked companies. We could check most of each site. The items that earn points often weren't there.
What the license file changed
California's list used to stall below the bar because nothing outside a company's own site could be checked. The CSLB's License Master file fixed that. When we checked in September 2026, the board's data portal said the file covers every license that is currently renewed or expired but still renewable, and leaves out cancelled, revoked and non-renewable ones. It carries the license number, business name, address, status, issue and expiration dates and classifications, and the board charges nothing for it.
We look for a single active, unexpired license whose business name matches the company's own site name, in the same city. 42 of 69 matched, and most of the rest came back as clear misses, which count as checked all the same. That's how 54 companies cleared the bar. The others appear unscored. Several sit a single point under the 70% line, mostly because the search couldn't tie their name to one record either way.
How to check a restoration company in California
The Contractors State License Board runs a free license lookup. You can search by license number, business name or a person's name, and the result shows the license status and complaint disclosure. When we checked in September 2026, the board's search tips said a California contractor license number contains no letters, and that a business name built on a person's name is easier to find with the last name typed first.
Home Improvement Salesperson registrations show up in the same lookup, which helps when the person quoting your job is a salesperson rather than the licensed contractor. The board also points homeowners to its Hire a Licensed Contractor page before they sign anything.
Treat the downloadable file as a snapshot. The board's own disclaimer says license status can change at any time and sends you to its Instant License Check for the current picture, so run that check on the day you hire. IICRC and EPA Lead-Safe records aren't logged for any California company, and profiles show those as Not verified.

How do I look up a California restoration contractor's license?
Use the Contractors State License Board's Check a License page. You can search by license number, business name or the name of a person on the license, and the result shows the license status and complaint disclosure. If a business name contains a person's name and nothing comes up, the board suggests typing the last name first.
What does the CSLB check prove about a company?
That the board's License Master file lists an active, unexpired license under the company's own business name in the same city, along with its classification. It says nothing about insurance or workmanship. A miss is recorded as no matching active record: a license issued under another legal name, or under a person's name, won't match, so ask for the number.
Why is there no business registry check for California?
We use only official records we can search in bulk under clear terms, and we don't yet have one for California business entities. So entity status and years operating stay unchecked for every California company, which is why coverage here clusters just above the bar rather than higher.
Where are the Los Angeles and San Diego companies?
On their city pages. Once a metro area has enough listed companies, it gets its own page, and those companies come off this statewide list. The Oakland and Sacramento areas work the same way. Everything left here is outside those four areas.
