Restoration companies in New Jersey

Which restoration companies in New Jersey can we vouch for on evidence?

There's no ranked list. We reviewed 170 New Jersey restoration companies and 21 met the listing bar, but none reached 70% coverage. The Newark area has its own page, and the 9 companies elsewhere in the state are here. A company's website tops out at 69% on its own, and no open-data registry or license file is wired for New Jersey yet, so nobody can be ranked. Check the contractor's HIC registration before you sign.

How we check companies in New Jersey

Water, mold and sewage, less fire

The 9 companies on this page lean hard toward water and mold: both appear on every site. Sewage and biohazard cleanup is common too, at 7 of 9, and storm damage sits at 5 of 9. Fire and smoke is the outlier. Only 3 of 9 document it, so after a kitchen fire you'll want the service filter, or the Newark area page.

Emergency cover is strong. 8 of 9 state round-the-clock service, and 8 of 9 help with insurance claims. Free estimates are rarer, offered by 4 of 9. No listing is a franchise location.

What the New Jersey sites don't say

Speed and guarantees are missing from most of them. 2 of 9 say how quickly a crew shows up, and 1 of 9 mentions a warranty on the work. 6 of 9 name an industry standard, such as IICRC S500 for water or S520 for mold, which we count as the company's own claim. None shows a third-party credential we could verify.

No ranking, and what it would take

We rank a page only when at least 8 companies reach 70% coverage. In New Jersey none does, here or in the Newark area. Websites answer a lot of what we check, enough for a median of 69%, but the last points need an outside record. New Jersey's business search is a lookup page rather than open data we can query, and its HIC registrations aren't in a license file we've wired. When either becomes available to us, these companies will be scored again.

How to check a restoration company in New Jersey

Look for the HIC number first. According to the Division of Consumer Affairs' compliance checklist, home improvement contractors must register with the Division every year, and the number, which starts with "HIC reg.#", must appear on their ads, contracts and commercial vehicles. No number on the estimate is a reason to ask why.

To confirm it, use the Division's License Verification System. HIC registrations are issued in the business name, so pick the business search.

Get it in writing. Any home improvement contract over $500 must be written and must name the contractor's registration number and liability insurance. You have until midnight of the third business day after receiving your copy to cancel, and the contractor owes a full refund within 30 days.

Mold is a different story. The Department of Health says New Jersey has no state certification programs for mold or indoor air companies, and its lists of mold firms aren't an endorsement. In a home built before 1978, EPA runs lead-safe renovation certification for paid work that disturbs paint. The Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services' Business Entity Name Search shows a company's registration whatever its status. We haven't logged HIC, IICRC Certified Firm or EPA Lead-Safe checks for any New Jersey company, so profiles mark them Not verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a New Jersey restoration company need to be registered?

If it does home improvement work, yes. The Division of Consumer Affairs says home improvement contractors must register every year, and the registration number, starting with HIC reg.#, has to appear on ads, contracts and commercial vehicles. Registrations are issued in the business name, so search by business in the License Verification System.

Does New Jersey certify mold remediation companies?

No. The Department of Health says there are no state certification programs for companies doing mold or general indoor air work. It keeps lists of mold firms, but says those lists aren't an endorsement.

Can I cancel a home improvement contract in New Jersey?

Yes, within a short window. Home improvement contracts over $500 must be in writing and name the contractor's registration number and liability insurance. You can cancel before midnight of the third business day after you receive a copy, and a full refund is due within 30 days.
