Which restoration companies in Kentucky can we vouch for on evidence?

Yes, Kentucky has a ranked list: 12 of the 18 listed companies. The Kentucky Secretary of State's business entity search is what lifted them over 70% coverage. We look each company up by exact name and city, and a clean result confirms the entity and, for a Kentucky-formed company, its organization date. The six below the line are still in the table, compared on what their sites document.

87 companies reviewed in Kentucky, 18 met the listing bar, 12 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more). Ranked by Evidence Score.

  • Kentucky law bars contractors from negotiating your insurance claim, and lets you cancel a repair contract within five business days of a written claim denial.

Kentucky companies reach this page in two steps. First comes the listing bar: restoration named on the company's own site, a working contact route, a readable location and a second source that agrees. Then a fixed set of weights scores each one. A missing or unchecked item earns nothing, which is why every score sits next to a coverage figure: coverage says how much we could check, and the score says what we found.

What the evidence shows

Full-service more often than not

Water damage is universal on this list: all 18 companies document it. Past water, most of these sites still cover a lot. Mold remediation, sewage or biohazard cleanup and storm work each appear on 11 of 18 sites, and fire and smoke restoration on 10 of 18.

Emergency cover is strong too. 14 of 18 state 24/7 service, and 12 of 18 say they help with insurance claims. Free estimates are less common, on 9 of 18.

Franchises make up 5 of 18 listings. Each one is scored on its own local page and record, not on the national brand's.

The promises Kentucky sites skip

Not one of the 18 describes a warranty on its work. Response time does a little better: 5 of 18 say how soon a crew arrives. 9 of 18 name an industry standard such as IICRC S500 or S520, a self-reported claim we score as self-reported.

That S520 mention matters more here than elsewhere, because Kentucky ties its mold remediation standards to those same principles (see below). A company that names S520 is at least speaking the state's language. Ask how it documents that it followed it.

The medians show the pattern. Ranked Kentucky companies have 78% median coverage but a median score of 35. We could check most of the scale, and much of what we checked wasn't there.

What the Secretary of State search added

The Kentucky Secretary of State's Business Entity Search is public, and we query it for each listed company by exact name, in the same city. A unique match confirms the legal entity. Its organization date counts as years operating only when the entity was formed in Kentucky; an out-of-state company registered here keeps the confirmation without the age.

Without that record, no Kentucky company clears 70%. With it, 12 of 18 do, and those 12 make up the ranking.

How to check a restoration company in Kentucky

Kentucky's Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction licenses or certifies plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors, sprinkler and fire alarm contractors and building inspectors. If your repair includes plumbing or electrical work, the department's License Search and Verification page is where to confirm the person doing it.

Mold has a statute behind it. KRS 367.83805 directs the Department of Law to set minimum standards for mold remediation companies operating in the state, built on the IICRC S520 principles, with the Attorney General enforcing them.

Insurance is where Kentucky law is most specific. Under KRS 367.628, a contractor can't represent you or negotiate your claim, as a public adjuster or otherwise, and can't advertise itself as a claims or insurance specialist. It can still write an estimate and speak with the insurer's representative once you've filed. And under KRS 367.622, a contract meant to be paid by insurance can be canceled before midnight of the fifth business day after your insurer says in writing that all or part of the claim isn't covered.

Kentucky isn't on the EPA's list of states running their own lead program, so the EPA handles Renovation, Repair and Painting certification. The EPA says anyone paid to disturb paint in housing built before 1978 generally must be certified. We haven't logged license, IICRC Certified Firm or lead certification checks for any Kentucky company; each profile marks them Not verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kentucky set standards for mold remediation companies?

Yes. Kentucky law (KRS 367.83805) directs the Department of Law to set minimum standards for mold remediation companies operating in the state, based on the IICRC S520 principles, and the Attorney General enforces them. We found no Kentucky page describing a separate mold license, so we don't claim one.

Can a Kentucky restoration company handle my insurance claim?

It can give you an estimate and talk with the insurer's representative after you file. Under KRS 367.628 it can't represent you or negotiate the claim, as a public adjuster or otherwise, and it can't market itself as a claims or insurance specialist.

What if my insurer denies the claim after I've signed a repair contract?

If the contract was expected to be paid by insurance, KRS 367.622 lets you cancel it before midnight of the fifth business day after the insurer tells you in writing that all or part of the claim isn't covered.

Which trades does Kentucky license?

The Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction licenses or certifies plumbers, electricians, boiler contractors, sprinkler and fire alarm contractors and building inspectors. Its License Search and Verification page covers those licensees.
