Restoration companies in Iowa

Which restoration companies in Iowa can we vouch for on evidence?
Yes. Iowa has a ranked list, and 13 of the 17 companies we list are on it. Their own websites got them most of the way. What pushed them past the 70% coverage bar was a match in the Iowa Secretary of State's active business entity records, which confirms the entity and, for a company formed in Iowa, gives its start date. Contractor registration with the state is a separate record, and you'll want to look that up yourself.
81 companies reviewed in Iowa, 17 met the listing bar, 13 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more). Ranked by Evidence Score.

Top 13 Restoration Companies in Iowa (2026)
Key Takeaways
- Water damage leads the Iowa list at 15 of 17 companies. Fire and smoke work and sewage cleanup each show up on only 6 of 17.
- Just 2 of 17 sites state a response time, and just 2 of 17 describe a warranty on the work.
- No listed Iowa company shows an outside credential we could confirm. The ranking rests on each site plus the state's business records.
- Iowa contractors earning at least $2,000 a year from construction must register with DIAL. Search the registration before you sign.

Before any Iowa company was scored, it had to pass our listing bar: restoration work named on its own site, a working phone or contact route, a location we could read and a second source that agrees. Scoring then uses one set of weights for every state. Whatever we couldn't check earns zero, and the coverage figure beside each score shows how much of the scale was checkable for that company.

What the evidence shows
Water first, the rest is patchy
Iowa's list is built around water. 15 of 17 companies document water damage work, and after that the menu thins out fast. Mold remediation appears on 10 of 17 sites and storm damage on 7 of 17. Fire and smoke restoration and sewage cleanup are the rarest, at 6 of 17 each.
So don't assume a company handles everything. If you've had a kitchen fire or a sewer backup, filter the list by that service first, because most listed Iowa companies don't claim it.
11 of 17 say they answer around the clock. Insurance claim help is mentioned on 10 of 17 sites and free estimates on 9 of 17. None of the listings is a franchise location.
Where Iowa sites go quiet
The weak spots are the promises you'd most want in writing. Only 2 of 17 companies say how quickly a crew shows up, and only 2 of 17 describe a warranty. 7 of 17 cite an industry standard, usually IICRC S500 for water or S520 for mold. That's the company's own claim, and we score it as one.
It explains the gap between the two medians. Ranked Iowa companies have a median coverage of 78%, which means most of the scale could be checked. Their median score is 47, because what could be checked was often missing.
What the Secretary of State records added
The Iowa Secretary of State publishes its active business entities as an open data file. We look for each listed company's exact name in the same city there. A clean match confirms the entity is active, and when the company was formed in Iowa, its effective date becomes the years operating figure. A company formed in another state gets its registration confirmed, but we don't count the Iowa date as its age.
That record is the difference between ranked and unranked here. A website alone can't reach the 70% line, so the 13 ranked companies are the ones the registry could speak for.
How to check a restoration company in Iowa
Start with registration. DIAL requires construction contractors to register if they earn at least $2,000 a year from construction, and its Contractor Registration page links to a public "Check a contractor license" search. A missing registration is worth a question before any work begins.
Storm work has its own rule. Under Iowa Code 103A.71, a residential contractor can't offer to rebate your insurance deductible, and can't represent you or negotiate with your insurer on a claim for roof or other exterior repair. If a contractor breaks either rule, the catastrophe repair contract is void. Be wary of a crew that offers to "handle the insurance" on a hail claim.
Mold has no state benchmark we could find. Iowa HHS doesn't recommend testing, and says no regulatory levels exist to compare results against. We found no state mold contractor license either, so ask the company what standard it follows and get the scope in writing.
For a home built before 1978, the EPA has authorized Iowa to run its own lead Renovation, Repair and Painting program, so certification goes through the state. The Secretary of State's business entity search shows whether the company's legal entity is on file. We haven't logged DIAL registration, IICRC Certified Firm or lead certification checks for any Iowa company, so each profile shows those as Not verified.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Iowa restoration contractors have to register with the state?
Most do. When we checked in September 2026, the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL) said construction contractors, whether individuals or businesses, must register if they earn at least $2,000 a year from construction. Those who earn less, or who only work on their own property, don't have to.
Can an Iowa contractor negotiate my insurance claim after a storm?
No. Iowa Code 103A.71 bars a residential contractor from representing or negotiating for a homeowner on an insurance claim for roof or other exterior repair, and from promising to rebate your deductible. A catastrophe repair contract is void if the contractor does either.
Does Iowa license mold remediation companies?
We found no Iowa page describing a state mold contractor license, so we don't claim one. The Department of Health and Human Services doesn't recommend mold testing and says there are no regulatory levels or guidelines for comparing test results.
Why aren't all 17 Iowa companies ranked?
Four of them sit under 70% coverage. A website can't carry a company over that line by itself, and for those four the business records search didn't settle it. An owner can send the registered entity name through our corrections page.
