Which restoration companies in Connecticut can we vouch for on evidence?

Yes. Connecticut has a ranked list, and 13 of the 17 companies we list are on it. Two state open-data records did the lifting: the Department of Consumer Protection's home improvement contractor registrations and the Secretary of the State's business registry. Both are public, and either a match or a clear miss counts as checked, which took most companies past the 70% coverage bar that a website alone can't reach.

89 companies reviewed in Connecticut, 17 met the listing bar, 13 of those scored here (evidence coverage of 70% or more). Ranked by Evidence Score.

Every company listed here passed our listing bar first, then got scored on fixed weights from its own website and two Connecticut state records. The coverage figure beside each score tells you how much of it we could check, and a company needs 70% coverage to hold a rank. An item we couldn't find earns nothing. We don't use star ratings or review counts anywhere in the score.

What the evidence shows

Water and storm lead the list

Connecticut companies lean toward the jobs weather creates. Water damage is documented on 16 of 17 sites, and storm damage on 15 of 17. Mold remediation and fire and smoke work each appear on 13 of 17. Sewage and biohazard cleanup is the thin line, on 10 of 17, so check that column before calling about a sewer backup.

Insurance claim help is stated by 14 of 17, and free estimates by 13 of 17. Round-the-clock service is less common than you might expect: 11 of 17 say they run 24/7. One listing is a franchise location.

What the state records added

In Connecticut we can check a restoration company against two official records. The first is the Department of Consumer Protection's home improvement contractor registrations, which the state publishes as open data. We searched each listed company's business name and found an active registration for 9 of 17. A miss there doesn't prove a company is unregistered. A registration held under the owner's name or another legal name won't match.

The second is the Secretary of the State's business registry, which shows whether an entity is on record and when a Connecticut-formed company registered. We use that date for years operating only when the entity was formed in Connecticut.

Those two searches are why Connecticut has a ranking at all. Median coverage across the list is 84%.

Checked, but not always found

Coverage and score measure different things. Coverage is how much we could check; the score is what we found. The ranked Connecticut companies have a median score of 54, well under their coverage, and the gap comes from the sites themselves. Only 3 of 17 say how quickly a crew arrives, and 1 of 17 describes a warranty on the work. 10 of 17 name an industry standard such as IICRC S500 or S520, which we score as the company's own claim.

How to check a restoration company in Connecticut

Start with registration. When we checked in September 2026, the Department of Consumer Protection said anyone contracting with a consumer to do work on residential property must register under the Home Improvement Act, and registered contractors must carry general liability insurance of at least $20,000. The state's eLicense License Lookup searches those registrations, and the state treats it as a primary source of verification.

Mold work follows the same rule once it turns into repair. The Department of Public Health says Connecticut doesn't license or credential mold inspectors or abatement professionals, but abatement that replaces sheetrock, studs or window frames needs home improvement contractor registration.

Two protections apply after you sign. You have three business days to cancel a home improvement contract, up to midnight on the third business day, and Saturday counts as a business day. If a registered contractor leaves you with an unpaid court judgment, the Home Improvement Guaranty Fund can pay up to $25,000 toward it. That only works if the contractor was registered, and the Fund doesn't cover new home construction.

For a house built before 1978, ask about lead-safe certification. Connecticut isn't authorized to run its own lead Renovation, Repair and Painting program, so the EPA certifies renovation firms working here. We log home improvement registrations for Connecticut, but not lead-safe or IICRC checks, so profiles show those two as Not verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a restoration company in Connecticut need to be registered?

For residential work, generally yes. Under the Connecticut Home Improvement Act, anyone contracting with a consumer to do work on residential property must register with the Department of Consumer Protection, and registered contractors must carry general liability insurance of at least $20,000.

Does Connecticut license mold remediation?

No. The Department of Public Health says the state doesn't license or credential anyone doing mold inspection or abatement. Mold abatement that replaces building materials such as sheetrock, studs or window frames does require home improvement contractor registration.

Can I cancel a home improvement contract in Connecticut?

Yes, within three business days, up to midnight on the third business day. The Department of Consumer Protection counts Saturday as a business day.

What if a registered contractor leaves me with a bad job?

The Home Improvement Guaranty Fund can pay a homeowner up to $25,000 toward an unpaid court judgment against a registered home improvement contractor. The contractor must have been registered, and the Fund doesn't cover new home construction.

Why do some listed Connecticut companies have no rank?

Their coverage is under 70%. For some, neither state record search gave a clear answer either way. Others have websites too thin to check the rest of the score, even with a registration on file. An owner can send the registered name through the corrections page.
