What the evidence shows

Fire outranks mold on this list

Water damage leads, documented by 7 of 8 Las Vegas companies. Fire and smoke comes next at 6 of 8, and mold trails at 5 of 8. Storm work and sewage cleanup are the short lines, at 3 of 8 each. A burst supply line or a kitchen fire fits most of this list. A sewer backup narrows it to a few names, so filter the table before calling.

Four of eight on the paperwork

Insurance help and free estimates each show up on 4 of 8 sites, and 4 of 8 name an industry standard such as IICRC S500. The last is a self-reported claim. Response time is stated by 3 of 8, and 1 of 8 describes a warranty. Every listing is independent, with no franchise locations.

With a list this short, the phone call carries more weight. Ask how long until a crew arrives, whether the estimate is free, and what the company stands behind once the job is signed off.

Checking a company in Las Vegas

The Nevada State Contractors Board says every contractor must be licensed before bidding, offering to do work or negotiating a price, and it sets a bond amount for each license. Its License Search takes a license number, company name or the name of a principal. So ask for the license number before you ask for a quote.

On mold, the one state rule we could confirm is an exemption. Nevada's licensing law for environmental health specialists doesn't apply to people doing mold assessment or remediation. The Nevada page has the other state rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a licensed contractor for a small repair in Las Vegas?

Not always. Nevada exempts repair or maintenance work under $1,000 in labor and materials, but the exemption falls away if the job needs a building permit, involves plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, heating or air conditioning, or is part of a larger project worth $500 or more.

What protection do I get from hiring a licensed Nevada contractor?

Access to the Residential Recovery Fund, among other things. The State Contractors Board says the fund can pay owners who live in their single-family home and lose money on a licensed residential contractor's job. It isn't available if you hired an unlicensed contractor, and it doesn't promise full recovery.
